What is a Doula?

What is a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula nurtures a mother, her newborn and their family (partner, older children, etc) during the period after the baby's birth (anytime from the
birth day to 12 weeks) with non-judgemental care. She ensures the family has the space to enjoy and heal during this time of growth by assisting the family in day to day functions and providing information and referrals. A doula's job may change each day depending on the needs of the family. The doula does not provide medical advice for the mother or baby but can help in following care orders and providing information and referrals.

What is a Birth Doula??
A birth doula supports a mother and her partner during childbirth. She provides emotional and physical support and essentially mothers the mother. The doula does not replace the partner but enhances the experience by providing a constant focus on the mother allowing the partner to provide support at their own comfort level. The doula does not perform medical procedures or speak for the mother or partner. Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth reduces:

  • the requests for pain medications and epidurals
  • the incidences of Cesearean Section
  • the need for Pitocin
  • the total length of labor

These effects are possible because the mother feels more secure, confident and relaxed during labor.
